Liga MB Round 4: Aguila defeat Santa Ana

There were just four rounds played in Regular Season of Liga MB and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Santa Ana (2-1) in San Miguel on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by top-ranked Aguila (3-0) 82-66. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Santa Ana. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Aguila forced 23 Santa Ana turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of power forward Brayan Garcia (194-98) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Lee Vasquez (176-91) contributed with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. American center Marc Montavious (206-90, college: Georgetown, KY) replied with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 16 rebounds for Santa Ana. Aguila have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 3-0 record behind leader Santa Tecla, which they share with San Salvador. Santa Ana at the other side dropped to the fifth place with one game lost. Aguila is looking forward to face league's leader Santa Tecla at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Santa Ana will play against San Salvador (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

At the losing side American point guard Jerry Price (170, college: Rowan) responded with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Brujos (1-2) left bottom position moving up to sixth place, which they share with Santiagueno. It was El Rapido's third loss in a row. They still close the standings with three games lost. They share the position with Cojute. Brujos will play against Cojute (#8) in Cojutepeque in the next round. El Rapido will have a break next round.
Liga MB top team - Santa Tecla (4-0) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat eighth ranked El Rapido (0-3) in La Union 92-84. The winners were led by Carlos Arias who had that evening a double-double by scoring 21 points and 20 rebounds. Even 15 points and 8 assists by Jerry Price did not help to save the game for El Rapido. Santa Tecla have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 4-0 record. Loser El Rapido still closes the standings with three games lost. They share the position with Cojute. Santa Tecla will meet league's second-placed Aguila in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. El Rapido will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 4 winless Chalchuapa was smashed by Fantasmas on the road 109-90. Santiagueno lost to undefeated San Salvador on its own court 66-113.
The most impressive performance of 4th round was 39 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds by Bernardo Polanco of San Salvador.



Aguila - Santa Ana 82-66

Liga MB top team - Santa Tecla (4-0) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat eighth ranked El Rapido (0-3) in La Union 92-84. Santa Tecla dominated down low during the game scoring 76 of its points in the paint compared to El Rapido's 20. They outrebounded El Rapido 52-23 including a 35-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Santa Tecla looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The winners were led by center Carlos Arias (200-89) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 21 points and 20 rebounds and American forward Arsenio Arrington (206-96, college: Aquinas Coll.) supported him with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Four Santa Tecla players scored in double figures. Even 15 points and 8 assists by American point guard Jerry Price (170, college: Rowan) did not help to save the game for El Rapido. Brujos - El Rapido 116-85

Brujos' fans can celebrate the first win of their team after two consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat El Rapido (0-3) 116-85. Brujos dominated down low during the game scoring 82 of its points in the paint compared to El Rapido's 36. They outrebounded El Rapido 44-25 including a 34-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Brujos players were unselfish on offense dishing 31 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by El Rapido's players. Worth to mention a great performance of Guyanese-American center Anthony Moe (206-90, college: Millersville) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points, 22 rebounds and 4 assists and Santos Romero (185-90) who added 24 points and 5 assists during the contest. At the losing side American point guard Jerry Price (170, college: Rowan) responded with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Francisco Lopez (178-3) scored 16 points. Five Brujos and four El Rapido players scored in double figures. Fantasmas - Chalchuapa 109-90

No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked Fantasmas (3-2) crushed bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (0-4) in San Vicente 109-90 on Sunday. Fantasmas outrebounded Chalchuapa 50-37 including 17 on the offensive glass. The winners were led by American guard Sameen Swint (193, college: GBC) who scored that evening 34 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds and the other American import guard Randy Bell (193-98, college: Dalton St.) supported him with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists. Even 21 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists by Marlon Viana did not help to save the game for Chalchuapa. American guard Chad Fortenberry-Miller (201-91, college: MacMurray) added 19 points and 13 rebounds for lost side. Four Fantasmas and five Chalchuapa players scored in double figures. Chalchuapa's coach rotated thirteen players seeing no chance for a win. Fantasmas moved-up to fourth place. Loser Chalchuapa still closes the standings with four games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Rather expected game when 6th ranked Santiagueno (1-2) was smashed at home by top-ranked San Salvador (3-0) 113-66 on Sunday. San Salvador dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Santiagueno's 46. San Salvador forced 19 Santiagueno turnovers and outrebounded them 48-32 including a 37-25 advantage in defensive rebounds. The winners were led by Dominican guard Bernardo Polanco (189-94) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 39 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds and American swingman Eddie Ishman (197-86, college: Miles) supported him with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Four San Salvador players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 20 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks by American Xavier Eaglin (201-97, college: PVAMU) did not help to save the game for Santiagueno. His fellow American import guard EJ Blackwell (193, college: Lourdes) added 12 points and 8 rebounds for lost side. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. San Salvador moved-up to second place, which they share with Aguila. Loser Santiagueno keeps the sixth position with two games lost. They share it with Brujos. San Salvador will meet at home Santa Ana (#5) in the next round. Santiagueno will have a break next round.
